Hawks Whittle the Warriors

Peanalties Finish Whitley

22nd October 2000

To celebrate their tenth anniversary the Blackburn Hawks took on the Whitley Bay Warriors in the English National Hockey League at Blackburn Arena tonight.

A goal from Tony Melbourne after 11 minutes opened the scoring to put Blackburn in the lead. They want two goals ahead on 18 minutes when Craig Sharman doubled the lead.

A two goal lead at the interval left the Hawks in a good position for the rest of the game.

The second period was a different story altogether, the scoreline read 3-5 after a period where 36 penalty minutes were handed out.

Haig's men fought back in the final period to take the game 7 goals to 6 after sixty minutes.

A closely fought game all around, and a very exciting one for the fans, which didn't lack its moments of contraversy either. The one that will stand out in most spectators minds coming at 57.30 when Craig Sharman scored the winner for the Hawks only to see the Warriors lack of disciplin come to a head with netminder Gordon Ford breaking his stick onto the ice and Andrew Carter throwing it into the croud. Both recieved penalties for their behaviour. A total of 86 penalty minutes were handed out during the game.

Karl Culley took the MVP award for Whitley, whilst player-coach Bobby Haig picked up the Home teams award.
